The body of Machaka Radebe, a 16-year-old Grade 8 learner at Brebner High School, was discovered in Bloemfontein days after she was reportedly kidnapped from her family home in Rocklands. Machaka was last seen by her brother around midday at their home on Thakalekwala Street. When he woke at approximately 12:45 p.m., he realized that his sister was missing. The family subsequently contacted her cellphone, but an unknown man allegedly answered and demanded about R3,000, reportedly threatening to kill Machaka if the money was not paid.
The family immediately reported the matter to police at Kagisanong Police Station, prompting an investigation into the reported kidnapping. At approximately 2 a.m., a passerby reportedly discovered Machaka’s body in a field near Phase 9 in Bloemfontein. Police allegedly found what appeared to be a stab wound to her back. She was declared dead at the scene. Authorities later arrested two suspects, reportedly aged about 28 and 40, in connection with the case. The suspects appeared before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court and faced charges reportedly involving kidnapping, extortion, and murder.
Reports further indicate that charges against one alleged associate were subsequently withdrawn, while the investigation and legal proceedings remain ongoing. The circumstances surrounding Machaka’s death have caused shock and grief among her family, classmates, teachers, and the wider community.
